Two Hit Creeper CD Review CD Title: The Stepchildren's Twisted Circus Music Self-Produced By Caren Spitler These guys are bad ass wicked! I will confess, the first time I saw Creeper live I just didn't "get" them. I couldn't get over the fact that there were no drums and no bass. The second time I let that go and listened to the music. This EP brings you the basic truth, about who Creeper is and what they are about, no bullshit, they are just about the music. The guys build the architecture of the songs well, and blend in subtle elements of programming. Whether or not you like them, if you are really paying attention to what you hear, you'll notice that their sound lacks nothing! Although the thought or sight of only two guys on stage may bend your mind a little, Two Hit Creeper is exactly as they should be. There is no place in this sound for additional musicians. The Stepchildren's Twisted Circus Music (a.k.a. music to have your skull crushed by), Two Hit Creeper's five song EP, is just sick! The title aptly fits this two member band. Listening to the CD brings visions of a sweet child's fairy tales in the bowels of the inferno. These two Philly boys can be found playing clubs in Hollywood, I do suggest checking them out and picking up this CD. And if you need reasons, I can give you five. One - The first cut on "My One Rant" is the song that finally won me over at Creeper's live shows. It sounds great on the recording. The rhythm takes on a feel of an industrial dance tune at times. Mike's thrusting vocals poured over Jim's crunching guitar so low and dark, (who needs a f**king bass) really make this track. There's also some very interesting programming going on here. Two - "Shoe Size," hmmm, as far as I can tell this cut seems to be about inadequacy… you know what they say shoe size is equal to, don't you? OK, who cares what it's about, this song has some very cool elements to it. Mike's accordion in "Shoe Size" lends extra dimension to the Creeper sound. If metal is the Devil’s music then the accordion is his instrument; forget the Polka this is where this instrument truly belongs, in Hell. I also dig the way this track changes tempos about halfway through, becoming almost a different song. Three - One thing I have always noticed about this band is how organic the programming sounds. The piano sounds in "Wetkoun" are a good example of that. It really helps to create the mood of the songs. The piano and strings give this track an almost classical quality. At points the swelling strings add a touch of epic grandeur. Four - My favorite piece on this CD, "Inside," is a bit slower than the others, I really like the feeling of this track; it's darker than dark. On this tune the guys slowed down the pace, and notice Mike's vocals all the more, which I really dig. The slower tempo of this song makes it all the more haunting. The sound of chimes ringing adds a foreboding sweetness to this track’s spooky vibe. Five - "Pull Ourselves Back" Jim leads in with guitar licks so blistering you can feel the burn. Then it takes on a circular feel. This track is less moody than most Creeper songs. This track brings naked aggression to a new high. If those aren’t good enough reasons to check out 2HC’s "Circus Music" then perhaps you should go find the band and decide for yourself what their music is all about. If you are into super-heavy sounds, you will enjoy the psychotic Creeper vision, and I would highly recommend picking up this EP. |
