Über-combo or alliance with evil? On one hot fall day, radio station KROQ and chain store Best Buy team up. LAs only vestige of rock and alternative radio held an event at the Best Buy store in Pasadena, to launch their new "KROQ 2K" calendar. The Best Buy gladly opened its doors to the throng of KROQ listeners who bought the newly printed calendars off the shelves at nearly lightning pace. Mom and Pop, if you were headed out to purchase that new big screen TV on this day, I pity you! For the entire day on Saturday November 13, 1999, the shopping complex in Pasadena belonged to the pierced and tattooed alternative youth.
The new KROQ calendar-as always its slick and beautiful to look at. Its packed with photos of all of your favorite bands and DJs. It also has the new bumper sticker and a CD of new music, all included for the low price of only $10.67 (stations call # 106.7). You can also find other useful info like seating charts for some of the popular LA concerts venues.
Kids arrived early (as early as 3:30 in one case) and pretty much stayed all day. Many came out to get their calendars signed by the radio personalities. Every one of them present and accounted for, including the elusive Bean Baxter (who actually phones in his portion of the morning show from Washington state). Fans of the station and its on-air crew waited in long lines to get autographs.

There were those in attendance who did not care about the KROQ signing, those who arrived in the morning and camped out to see their favorite band "System of a Down." Although this is a band just recently added to the stations play list, they are not short on fans. "System of a Down" is one of LAs heavy bands that has gained a strong and extremely loyal following without the assistance of LA air play. The crowd was filled with dozens of kid wearing "System" shirts. These loyal followers remained steadfast to their mission to see the band, finding their space for viewing and not budging one inch. The wait was long and hot and kids packed themselves against the stage in anticipation of seeing the band. "System of a Down" arrived and played the KROQ parking lot stage with the Best Buy logo as a backdrop.
