Jucifer CD Review
By Caren Spitler I Name You Destroyer is Jucifer's first full length release on their new label Velocette Records. Jucifer are the Atlanta, GA team of Ed Livengood and Amber Valentine. This duo creates mammoth sound and a wraithlike atmosphere that is both formidably forceful and eerily fragile. This band has been compared to bands like the Melvins, the Breeders, Royal Trux, and Nirvana. Singer Amber's sticky sweet coquettish vocals mixed with fire and spit are balanced by Ed's aggressive drum sounds that add weight and keep the band's feet on the ground. The sonic vision and vocal atmosphere of this album is beyond ethereal. This otherworldly, and mischievously scorching sludge rock pulls from a diverse pool of styles to create a sounds that is off kilter and truly unique. Sounding 60's Go-Go-esq in one song, contemporary techno in the next, and hard core metal in others. In songs like "Pinned in Glass" Jucifer prove that a song can be pretty and have balls all at once. Sabbath like riffs, and supersonic screams breath life into "Queen B". Amber's vocals aren't so serene and surreal in this tune she summons up the demon from the pit of her soul and allows him to reek havoc all over this track. Other songs like "Memphis" and "Lazing" show an almost techno side of the band. Big drum sounds, and the distorted dirty guitar in "Vulture Story" juxtapose the verbal slap of this tune. This is one of many songs where Ed is laying it down heavy on the skins. This collection of song is overall indefinable a lot of the songs can seem melodic and aggressive at once. There are also some elements that thicken up the mood and tempo of this album. Looking for something out of the ordinary that still rocks, try I Name You Destroyer. |
