CD Title: Takk...
Record Label: Geffen
By Adam Bowman
Some bands rely on a gimmick, some bands have one assigned to them, and some bands...well, they just come around. Sigur Ros is an example of the latter. Never mind the foreign language, the band has managed to make an appearance on the American scene by producing some of the most beautiful and haunting music in a long time, the most recent of which being “Takk...”. Ultimately, what Tool is to the analytical, Sigur Ros is to the emotional. Don't misread me, the band is capable of great power (as the final minute or so of “Glosoli” will attest to.) However, Sigur Ros proves to be at their best when they bring in the elements of orchestral melodies and instrumentation (bells, piano, string...they are all to be found here.)
As is to be expected, an album that reflects elements of The Beatles and Dream Theater may leave some listeners perplexed. Some will just hear the different languages and immediately turn it loose as a gimmicked band, which is a shame really. This disc deserves at least one spin in everyone's player of choice, because those who can at least accept the differences will find a very imaginative and compelling creation here. This is music that doesn't necessarily demand your attention at all times, but those who choose to dig deeper can find a great deal of depth in the melodies and arrangements. If nothing else, give “Takk...” a chance. There is no gimmick here, just pure and beautiful music to be enjoyed.
