Triple Trouble at the Troubadour
AGROKULCHER / CLEANER / GHOULSPOON
MONDAY MARCH 27, 2000

By Caren Spitler

Yet another kick-ass night at the Troubadour! I arrived in time to see one of the Scene's favorite local bands, Agrokulcher. As usual those boys came on and released the torrential hurricane that only Agro can! Heavier than heavy, they rule!

Matt worked the crowd and let loose that voice from the pit of his soul; as I have said before, DAMN! They played a great set, but it is never long enough for me. On their game, they all let it rip; Jesse tearing it the f**k up on his guitar, Bill slamming you down with the bass, and Gordon driving home drums that could kill. The crowd was eating it up and couldn't get enough.

When Agro finally left the stage everyone chanted in unison for them to come back for more, but to no avail. I wasn't the only one who thought their set was too short.

Next up was Cleaner.

This band's name describes them well, musically and visually. This band is working a look, and it's all good! They use projected images on a large screen to lend a touch of atmosphere, but trust me they'd do just fine without it.

They work a real Euro Rock sound; smooth and sexy. I love the song "Highchair," it is awesome, heavy, and wicked. Throughout the song is this cool guitar lick like a ghostly air-raid siren. Cleaner is slick like hard candy, tasty and crunchy. The lead singer Sarah is badass! She knows how to work it!

Ghoulspoon from San Diego had the honor of holding the late spot. Unfortunately, a lot of people left before they went on. Too bad, they really missed out.

This band messes you up! All I have to say is these guys really need to get their butts down to the LA area more often. They have a funky, trippy, heavy sound. You will find yourself trying to pigeonhole 'em, but you can't. You'll hear rap-core one moment, then a touch of Latin jazz, followed by a guitar solo reminiscent of Pink Floyd.

They have it all, combine it well, and leave you wanting more. They don't come over our way often enough, but next time they do, check them out.
