Gitane Demone
AT REPENT IN ANAHEIM / APRIL 15TH 2000
Review by Orren Merton

Gitane cut her teeth in Christian Death, earning herself a reputation as a seductive crooner of Gothic proportions. Currently out on a tour of Goth clubs, one would expect a pretentious show, filled with doomy drum machines and other electronic elements as the backdrop for her apocalyptic wails. The truth, however, was far from it!

Repent itself is a relatively young, twice-monthly goth club making a solid reputation for itself in Orange County with it's generally easy going atmosphere, mix of music, and now monthy live music. Gitane herself, with her dyed platinum liberally spiked hair, white shirt, and overalls, looked much more comfy than gloomy, and was extremely accessible, sauntering around the club smiling before the performance. This was the first clue that we were not in for Christian Death light at all...

When she took the stage, she was accompanied by only a single electric guitarist. All the "cheesy goth" factor immediately vanished as her wonderful, almost operatic voice intoned sweet songs of love and loss. The music itself shared more in common with "Changes" era Bowie/glam than goth, and she was in great spirits; skipping, hopping, emoting, and being dramatic in front of a very enthusiastic and supportive crowd. Gitane herself was very humble, appreciative, smiley and affectionate towards the audience, even poking fun at the "goth" tag and how they all were "supposed" to be cold and aloof, in contrast to the warmth that both audience and performer were exhibiting. It may not have been "goth" but it sure was good!
