POWERMAN 5000

It's not easy being little brother...

You get picked on, beaten up, and forced to do evil big brother's bidding. Some may have you repair their ray guns, some may offer you the honor of being the cheesily-dressed second banana in their heroic adventures to save the galaxy from the evil one-eyed cyborgs of Ryland 5. Others still may go onto become multi-platinum musicians and write the story for the latest Crow movie. However, despite all the nuisances, every little brother at some point will have their moment in the sun. For lead singer Spider One and the rest of the Powerman 5000 crew, that time is now. With big brother Rob currently appearing on the Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack, the five Powermen have hit intergalactic paydirt with their second major label release, "Tonight The Stars Revolt!".

However, lunar life wasn't always so peachy for the space crew. There was a time when our heroes were clad in no more than skater shorts and regular t-shirts, playing to Boston crowds who were, to quote Spider himself, "trying to sound like The Replacements or Husker Du". With their brand of technological hard rock, they were obviously a fish out of water in the high time of grunge. Fortunately for our space sailors, there were bystanders listening. In 1994, Powerman 5000 were inked to an indy deal at Curve of the Earth Records. The same year would bring forth their unleashing of a debut release, entitled "True Force". Adding a year hatches another creature, which went by name of "The Blood-Splat Rating System",

Change would be a hurdle soon to come into sight, not only in the form of a move to Los Angeles, but also in wardrobe as well as a major label deal (they signed to Dreamworks the same year they moved, 1997). The lineup would also morph, as percussionist Jordan left the ship after their 1997 debut effort, "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio" (which, in the name of irony, is a reworking of track from "The Blood-Splat Rating System"). .

In a good twist of fate, he left the door open so the band could invite in a second guitarist, Mike Tempesta. In a good segue to the beginning of our saga, M.33 just happens to be the brother of former White Zombie skin abuser John Tempesta, who actually told him about PM5k's search for a second string plucker. If you're keeping score, we've now reached our finalized lineup: Spider One on vocals, M.33 and Adam 12 (yes, that's where he got the name, the television show) on guitars, and the tandem of Dorian 27 and Al 3 on bass and drums, respectively.

The release of a debut album would lead the vast majority of bands to rest on their laurels and enjoy the fruits of rock stardom. But a tour which the band felt was lackluster led to the five proving themselves as true workers and musicians, as they pressed on hoping to add a knockout blow after their first punch. Recruiting handy-dandy Tool helper Sylvia Massy and the same man who worked on Static-X's "Wisconsin DeathTrip", Ulrich Wild to produce the album, PM5k landed their pod in the studio to work on what would become by far their best selling effort. "Tonight The Stars Revolt!" would go on to not only give the group a trio of solid hits in "When Worlds Collide", "Nobody's Real" and "Supernova Goes Pop", but it also gave the band their own identity, something Spider himself had wanted since their Boston birth.

With the now-platinum Revolt wreaking havoc across both Earth's television and radio waves, our Powermen sought to up the ante. An appearance on Late Night With Conan O'Brien would only be the tip of the iceberg. Turning on the thrusters, they would eventually tour with heavy hitters among the like of Korn, Pantera, Marylin Manson, Danzig, Primus, and Coal Chamber were also done, as the guys stayed on the road non-stop. They would eventually join up with Wayne Static, Ken Jay, and the rest of Static-X for a quick run of the country.

Now, heading into the summer of 2000, they are joining System Of A Down, Korn, Metallica, and Kid Rock on a star-drenched bill going by the nickname of the Summer Sanitarium tour. From skater shorts to space suits and from Boston to the entire galaxy, the five men currently roaming space and time under the name of Powerman 5000 have little left to conquer.

A large fan base, three good hits and respect from their peers may lead some bands to lay back and enjoy the ride...then again, the same could've (and has been) said about have a debut album on a major label. If that was any indication, then with Spider One at the helm of the ride, the band has a starbright future ahead of them. Be warned, Earthlings, they haven't even reached top speed.
