CD Title: The First...The Last...The Tribe
Squishy Lemon Records

By Adam Bowman

May I say.......funk-ay. Gargantua Soul's The First...The Last...The Tribe is laden with hip-hop grooves and distorted guitars. From the simple guitar licks of Jason Bozzi and Marc Amendola to the subtle work of keyboardists/percussionists Tommy Hetz and Budzy, Gargantua Soul pieces together eleven tracks of funky rock.

While rock tends to brood a little more on songs like 'Prophet Of The Fire', there's some excellent harmonies to be found. 'Cover Me' (which features backing vocals of Hatebreed's Jamie Jasta), and 'The First' showcase some good melding of voices, although the chorus to 'Cover Me' may be shaky at times. 'Hands of Life' contains great acoustic work and is a departure from the head-on volume of previous tracks, while still holding onto the same groove.

Shaky vocals sometimes plague the tunes, but the entire album is well done. It's easily proven that all eleven songs hold a binding spirit, and that may be the best compliment of all.
