My ears are still ringing as I sit
down to write this. Being that this was my first Queens show,
I went in not fully knowing what to expect. I was not disappointed,
in fact I got much more than I bargained for. After a long wait,
the band finally took the stage at 9. There is a snapshot forever
frozen in my mind of the exact moment I saw Dave Grohl with his
arms poised in the air ready to strike the first down beat on
his drums. The opener was "Monster in Your Parasol" which led
into "Feel Good Hit of the Summer". New songs were interspersed
with the old. During the set Nick Olivieri and Josh Homme provided
some great intros, taking turns between the bass and guitar. Just
like they do with their voices, Josh' singing alternating with
Nick's screams.
Seeing Grohl and Lanegan on stage
again was bittersweet. It was a reminder of a time gone by in
a sense, but it also proved that they both could still kickass.
At one point Mark Lanegan took the stage to sing songs from
the bands upcoming album Songs for the Deaf. He walked
on stage head down, the epitome of coolness, sang
his parts and strolled off just as if he had never been there.
Set list included also included
"Mexicola", "Think I Lost My Headache", "Quick and to the Pointless",
and "Better Living Through Chemistry". The band did 2 encores
closing with "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" which Josh dedicated
to all the girls.
The Queens of the Stone Age were
well worth seeing. I am excitedly anticipating the release of
their new album as well as another round of concerts.
