It was a day filled with hot women, hot rods, and eight non-stop hours of Rockabilly music on multiple stages. We’re talking of course of the Annual Hootenanny, which made its stop in Orange County on Saturday July 6 at the Hidden Valley Field in Irvine. This year, the fans packed the Hidden Valley field to see captivating performances from such bands as the legendary LA punk vets X, former Clash member Joe Strummer, and the always-entertaining Reverend Horton Heat. As the day began promptly at noon the fans poured in, and began partying. The only draw back was that many of the bands performed well before 3pm, and as a result many fans missed seeing bands such as the raunchy rock of Nashville Pussy, and the psychobilly of Tiger Army among many others. |

On the mainstage, and definitely the highlight of the entire event was X. These LA punk pioneers blew everyone away. Playing over an hour of old school classics and some newer tunes, front woman Exene Cerevenka and bass player John Doe showed the crowd why X are considered one of the quintessential punk bands of our Era. Joe Strummer came on next, and shelled out a much mellower sound. Mixing Reggae, Jazz, and acoustic folk punk, Strummer even played a few old school Clash songs, which got a roaring approval from the audience. It was an amazing performance and a welcome comeback for the former Clash member. |

Joe Strummer sings old Clash tunes... "Police on my back." ....and took a walk on the wild side that Lou Reed could be proud of. |

Headlining the show and playing last was the Reverend Horton Heat, whose punk infused Rockabilly brought the crowd to its feet. The Reverend is a punk rock Elvis, rocking out on the guitar like nobody’s business. The crowd both sang along and moshed, but it was more of a mooch pit/swing dance party. The Hootenanny may not be for everyone, Rocakbilly is definitely an acquired taste, but, along with the hot women, party like atmosphere, and live band, this year’s fest was a hootin’, tootin’ good time! |
